The Scarlet Women

One of the first allusions that we discovered was where Kay Adams is always shown wearing scarlet. This is an allusion to the scarlet lady, also known as the whore of Babylon. (see Jenna’s blog for more info)

What I found especially interesting about this, however, was that Appolonia Vitelli was also wearing a red dress when Michael first saw her. though we didn't know it at the time, he would quickly make her father an offer he couldn't refuse, and gained her hand in marriage. Through this act, he effectively replaced Kay Adams with the other Scarlet woman, Appolonia. The fact that Kay Adams does not know about her could be important; when Michael returns, will he marry Kay as well?

  1. I agree with you... but there is still something bothering me.

I think (if you remember)that after Michael and Apollina (however you spell her name) met and Michael was at a little cafe with his body guards and whatnot; I recall that one of Michael's body guards asked the owner of the cafe (or was it a bar?) who the "lady in the purple dress" was. I find this kind of odd when we think her dress is scarlet/red they say its purple.
    Was this a technological glich?

  2. It does seem odd, Melisa. Maybe the director was trying not to be too obvious: its almost as if the characters shouldn't know that they are making allusions; otherwise, the 'third-wall' breaks down. Do you know what that term means?
